Susan Slocum Dyer: I am what is called a “transplant Alaskan." My home city is Boston. I am a lower elementary, public school teacher who has taught in high-needs villages across Alaska, including 350 miles above the Arctic Circle. I currently teach in the interior. I am also an AMI Montessori educator. When not in the classroom, I am painting or writing. My artwork has been published in literary journals from the West Coast to the East. I am also an internationally published poet. The great-great granddaughter of Joshua Slocum, the first person to solo circumnavigate the globe and author of the international classic, “Sailing Alone Around the World, “ I carry both my pen and paintbrush across the Alaska-Coastal Arctic tundra and throughout its boreal forest. Additionally, I am the current Prose Editor for Alaska Women Speak Journal. Lastly, but very significant, while I am (mostly) a solo adventurer, I joyously share a home with a beloved other. It’s all about balance.
